Precipitation, Magnetism, Chromatography And Test For Impurities
8] Precipitation : This method is used to separate a solution of two different solution.
That word is kinda logic right? Don't worry I will break it down,
When two different solution are mixed together the product will be one soluble compound and the other will be an insoluble substance called the Precipitate
The only method used to separate the precipitate from the solution is filtration.top↑
E.g when a solution of copper(ii) tetraoxosulphate (vi) [CuSO4] is added to a solution of Sodium hydroxide [NaOH], a soluble Sodium tetraoxosulphate (vi) [NaSO4] and an insoluble copper (ii) hydroxide [Cu(OH)2]which is the precipitate, will be formed.
CuSO4(aq) + NaOH(aq) - Cu(OH)2(aq) + Na2SO4(aq)
These two are the remaining techniques;
9] Chromatography : is the method used to separate a mixture by taking the advantage of their different rates of movement in a solvent over an adsorbent material, such as paper.top↑
Types Of Chromatography
1) paper chromatography and,
2) column chromatography.
In paper chromatography, the adsorbent material is filter paper and a variety of solvents, any varieties of solvents can be used, for example, we can use ethanol or ethyl ethanoate.
Uses of Chromatography
a] It is used to analyse blood and urine
b] It is used in the industry for identifying components of petroleum.
c] It is also used to separate dyes in a black ink.
d] It is also used for separation of colours.top↑
10] Magnetic separation : is used to separate magnetic particles from non-magnetic particles in a mixture.
E.g A mixture of iron filings and sulphur powder,
Now will all see that mixture can be in liquid form, gaseous form and in solid form. PLEASE NOTE THIS.
You can separate the iron filings from the mixture by introducing magnet to the mixture, the magnet will attract the iron filings leaving the sulphur powder because sulphur powder is a non-magnetic substance.
2) This method is also used to separate or remove magnetic impurities from tin ore in industry.top↑
That is all the separating techniques that will have, if you have any questions, feel free to ask via the comment box, uncle ASAP will be happy to answer you.
Don't forget to answer my question,
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAMPHOR AND CAMPHRA?
Test For Impurity
After getting a substance from a mixture by any of above separating techniques, it is compulsory to know whether the substance is pure or impure.
The only two ways to know if a substance is pure or impure is by boiling point and melting point.
feel free to ask me any question via the comment box or ask question page and I will be happy answer your question and take the session again if necessary, your comment notifications is like a bank alert to me so don't forget to write something.top↑
